Bear’s owners reached out to us for some support with his human/dog reactivity and obedience issues.
With his reactivity seeming to occur randomly and his obedience at the stage where he’d simply walk off if given a command, we knew it was in desperate need of addressing.
From the start it was clear that Bear was feeling threatened by the presence of people so we focused on building trust with another handler first. Once we had Bear handleable we focused on some of the fundamentals like loose leash walking and basic obedience to get him into a listening state of mind.
A great deal of his reactivity was being enabled by the fact he was disengaged from his owners, especially in areas of higher distraction. Without paying attention to his owners or following basic commands, he was doomed to fixate and subsequently react to things that were really of no importance to him.
Next we looked at his dog reactivity and brought one of our stooge dogs out. His reactivity to people was more severe than dogs, however at a close distance the level of his reactivity ramped up. After some threshold work he was happy enough to relax next to us with no issues.
Going forwards Bear’s owners know how to control and manage his behaviour and where their areas of focus are to improve his engagement and behaviour. Getting help is the first stage in the right direction and their keenness to learn and put it into practise is already providing results since our session.
Nice work guys!
