We’ve just finished up with Pablo’s third session with us and we think it’s safe to say he’s made another breakthrough.
From a highly stressed, fearful and reactive dog, to a playful, obedient and relaxed one (video in comments). All within a few sessions with the right support and training.
It was essential that we started the sessions off with the muzzle due to his bite history, but removing the muzzle was an essential step in establishing a solid relationship and reducing his overall level of irritability and stress. Once we’d built upon our relationship using clear handling and obedience, we got the muzzle off and focused on proofing the control we’d implemented in previous sessions.
Counter-conditioning Pablo’s response to people is going to be an essential part of his rehabilitation as he learns that people are to be valued, not kept away with an aggressive display. Achieving this through a combination of control, play and obedience enables us to raise the stakes while keeping a constant for Pablo to hold onto.
During the session Pablo was completely uninterested in our stooge dogs, or other people coming and going. He was focused on the job at hand, understanding of what was expected of him and honestly took it in his stride.
The difference in his owners confidence is handling skills are night and day and she should be very proud to see all of her hard work paying off.
In future sessions we will be expanding on his fundamentals and exposing him to typical walking spots, even the grooming process. So watch this space for future updates on Pablo’s journey!
