Today we had this handsome little devil in for a training session on his leash pulling, and barking at his owners and other dogs.
We’re seeing more and more people bringing their puppies in to see us at the very first signs of trouble and we can’t stress the importance of doing this enough. If you catch a problem behaviour early you will save yourself an immeasurable headache down the line.
Like most issues Toby’s behaviour was being caused by a lack of engagement with his owners when out in areas of higher distraction. His leash walking for the most part was great, but when another dog was present this would typical begin to slip which would then lead to frustration building and barking would follow.
We went over the basics to build that engagement up and luckily for Toby his food drive is really nice. Within no time he was walking along and regularly checking in with his owners. Because they’ve already put some real work in with his training this process was made a great deal easier. Having him engaged meant he was able to walk around with multiple dogs on and off leash with no issues at all.
Lastly we went over a few common issues that are made with regards to timing, marking behaviours, rewarding incorrect behaviours, solidifying an out command, confidence building play, and things to avoid if you want to develop an obedient dog moving forwards.
Working with people who just want what’s best for their dog, have done their research and are willing to put the work in is a great feeling. Toby will be a little superstar in no time I’m sure of it.
Well done guys and keep up the good work!
