Shadow’s owners got in touch with us for some support around her reactivity towards dogs and people. Lockdown kept getting in the way of our booking but we eventually got her in as her owner was really keen to get us to take a look.
As soon as she arrived you could see that her reactivity was being driven by nerve and her lack of confidence. Part of this will have been created by the difficulty in appropriately socialising due to lockdown and routine changes, but genetic predisposition is typically the biggest driving factor in issues like this.
Shadow’s owner has really done her research and spent the time to educate herself as much as possible about all things dog training, and it shows! This makes behavioural adjustment work vastly easier and really helps to guarantee results for the dog moving forwards.
We went through a few of our techniques and protocols when working with nervous dogs and Shadow adjusted really nicely to them when we began using our own dogs for some conditioning work. She was excellent.
When working with nervous dogs it’s super important to work at a pace that is comfortable for them, the more you try to rush, the longer it will take. Little and often is the certainly the best approach to help them.
We’re really confident that Shadow will show gradual improvement in her confidence over time and her owner will be there to help navigate and support her effectively moving forwards.
